I have a bag of coins from my great uncle and this ones buggering me. Cannot get a year off it. Is this corrosive abuse? He kept it for some reason. I must know what happened to this thing!

Looks like it's been dipped in acid.
There are several other threads with similar
looking coins that have been acid dipped.

I agree, it looks like it has been soaked or dipped in an acid.

Why would someone dip a coin in acid?

Not exactly sure why someone would acid dip a coin, but people do use coins for science experiments or it could have been accidental (unlikely).

There are enough of them around that I would think there is a reason for it.

I can't imagine being bored enough to decide to find some acid and see if coins could swim.

Unfortunately, it's been dipped in acid. Not sure why people would do this, but maybe out of boredom or a science experiment. Look out for these on ebay being sold as a error coin.

Everybody figures acid but I've seen coins like these in municipal sewer lines. There is a very caustic soup that flows in there from peoples' home chemicals. My co-worker put them back into circulation.
