I'm trying to decide it it's worth sending this one off to PCGS to be graded. What are your opinions? I'm thinking it will get a details grade. Thanks!

are you looking to sell it, if so then I would grade it, but if you are going to keep I would just put it into a 2x2 and spend the money of a new coin. :) The back is so much better than the front, the front I think would drag it down, like a vg8

This is a rare date. From the sparse records it looks like it's worth $150-160 even in this condition. Many people set a threshold around $200 for slabbing so it is a close call. I would say yes, but it's close. If you wanted to sell it you would want it in a slab. Congrats on a nice coin and thanks for sharing.

Rare coin and graded worth alot - but, this one is a C shoot - Just put it away in an air-tite - it's cleaned so a details coin.

A 1859 S yes I would, you will want it graded for authentication for whenever the time comes to sell

Maybe you can hold it until you are able to submit multiple coins, unless you want to sell it right away.

I agree with coconutjoe, it's not worth submitting by itself and dropping close to $100 but if you have a group and can get it done for $50 then it's well worth it. It might make Fine Details.

I would send it to ANACS for authentication. I think it will come back F 12 details. It looks like corrosion on the obverse, and it has been cleaned.

Thanks guys. I'm not really planning to sell it but could in the future. Especially if I upgraded it to a non details coin. I had it in a type set at one time before I upgraded to a high grade/non key date. I was hoping to get fine details but I was afraid it wouldn't get that. Sounds like there's a slim chance it could happen.
What's the difference in sending it to ANACS? Do they tend to grade higher than others?

Because of the condition you would never recoup the grading fees. Those who might buy this as a hole filler aren't going to question its authenticity.

We all know it will come back detailed, which reduces the reason for TPG submission even further.

It's okay as is in MHO.

ANACS is the cheapest to authenticate for coins like yours.. Economy is $15. They won't miss any of the faults, and they won't overgrade it.

VG details (cleaned). This is a tough date, but a one-looker for a serious collector - the authenticity is beyond question. Don't waste your money.

PCGS economy is 20 so is NGC. It is not worth giving up the value in the market and limiting the number of potential interested buyers over a few dollars. You almost always give up more in liquidity and future value than you save on grading fees

I agree. It depends on the market and the buyer but this coin could bring $300 to $400 in the right setting.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll probably just hold onto it. When I get a few coins to send off I may include it to see what grade they give it.
