We do an annual coin show and every year we struggle with advertising. We print up flyers and post them on bulletin boards at supermarkets and malls. Our members attempt to persuade their friends and acquaintances to attend. We send reminder cards to everyone who entered our prize raffle from the previous year's show. Our local B&M coin shop hands out additional reminder cards to anyone who comes in the shop. We contact our local TV stations and invite them to come out and do a feature on the show (sometimes they actually do it!).

Our biggest single promotional expense is the 3-day ad we take out in our local newspaper which frankly I think is a big waste of money.

Do any of our members have any good ideas on how we can better promote our show? I would love to hear how other clubs are able to get their message out.

Thanks!

How big is the town/city that your doing this in? What would you say the average price of the coins would be? What time of the day is it? Are there any other events planned around that time or conventions happening in that same weekend/day?

Advertising in the local paper is a big waste of money. Advertising prices are up and readership is way down. I would take that money and invest in a website and lawn signs. I would be willing to bet that most coin collectors are using the internet so advertising on coin websites would help. You could also team up with other org's doing shows to increase your exposure and piggy back on their advertising efforts. Maybe do a promotion where each kid under a certain age gets a prize. Advertise on local message boards if you have any. Ok not sure if any of these are good as I've never run a coin show, but hey the more ideas the better right.

Our show hours are 10-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday. We always run on the 4th weekend in October and sometimes that's not a good choice. Last year we had a big home & garden show and a Civil War re-enactment going on that same weekend which I think drew down our attendance.

We are in Fresno, CA which has close to 500,000 people now. Our typical attendance for the weekend runs about 500.

Lawn signs sounds like a decent idea. Lately some businesses in town are hiring people to hold big signs and stand on busy street corners waving the signs. If we had someone do that on the Friday before the show that might bring some results.

Hey, I'll consider almost any idea short of skywriting!

If you have any events around you, then maybe you can take advantage of that. Civil war reenactment would be a great thing to tie in with coins. I'm pretty sure a lot of them would be interested. With the botanical show, you can always hold a flower judging contest and give away a commemorative or foreign coins with flowers on them? Thought that might not really bring in people, but I'm guessing there's going to be a lot of women there so maybe some of the dealers can bring jewelery and you can advertise that too. I guess you would have to research this things a bit to be sure.

You can always make a treasure hunt for kids where they find certain cheaper coins and tokens that let them get free coins (Free $5, $10, $15 dollar coin of your choice) which would be taken out of the advertising fund. I think that if you get kids excited and interested about it they're drag their parents along. With how the ecomony is, some parents might be weary of taking their kids to a show so if you mention(on fliers or whatever) that they're plenty of coins under $10 then I don't think they would protest too much. Maybe you could also do a show and tell about certain coins at some children related function to get interest like that?

You said you invite local TV stations to come and do a feature on the show. One method you can try is to actually write a story about the show yourself and submit it to local radio and newspapers. Write it in the same style they would use and send it to editorial.

It is harder than you imagine to fill a paper, I have seen stories submitted printed word for word just in an effort to fill space. That's free advertising in the papers.

Similarly with the radio, pick the shows you think would be more likely to run with the story and submit it. Non-collectors are always interested in coins and notes if they think they may have something special. Radio is the perfect place to "help" people. As part of your submission, state that, as an expert, you would be more than willing to come on the show a few times in the lead up to your show to answer questions people may have. You can then of course plug your event as much as you like.

Here is my 2CENTS. Around me we have a minimum of 3 coin shows a month and all within 15 miles of my house. A few more but are much further. They are all very crowded most of the time. Occationally one is very empty due to way to many other coin and other shows conflicting with them. For example there was a coin show not long ago where there was also a gun show, dog and cat show, computer show, train show and the taste of Chicago all at the same time. Not smart planning but these coin shows are always on the same day, each month regardless of anything.
Back to your problem. For one thing having a coin show or any show once a year is not to smart. The general populace have short memories. This is why politicians don't worry about anything until a little before an election. People just forget. You should try to have your coin shows more often so people get used to where, when, etc. Once you set a standard day and time people will go more often. If once a year no matter how much advertising, people just forget.
One of our more popular monthly coin shows has some items that attracts people. For one thing there is always a table or two with other than coin items. Such as jewelery, currency, some stamps and once there was a guy with old arrowheads. Always a pile of free pamphlets about coins on a table as you walk in. Parking is free, admission is free. A stand with food and drinks is a necessity as well as a clean washroom if you want to attract women.
Try to find a dealer that sells coin books, plastic rolls for coins, 2x2's, cardboard boxes for 2x2's and miscellaneous coin items. This makes it important for some to want to go there just to buy such items. Again if once a year many can't wait that long to buy some 2x2's. Ask at your local schools if they want someone to put on a demonstration about the new presidential coins for educational putposes. Such a demo could produce new coin interest and kids will want their parents to take them to a coin show.
Advertising in the newspaper is usually just a waste of time. Even the internet is not that great since the only people that see this are the ones that go looking for such a add. On coin forums like this also, you will only get the attention of a few in your area that are members of this forum but not many new possible customers for a show. Signs around the area on lawns, stores, etc. could be more of a benifit to attract new people.
Most important you should look into having a show more frequently so people get used to them.

I have never ventured into the coin show aspect. I used to sponsor and promote a Reptile/Exotic Pet Show here in Missouri. As with coin shows you hit a specific group of people. Newspaper ads seem to be a waste. We used to advertise in the weekly sales papers such as here we have one called the weekly trader and ad tracker and such. You can seem to place 10 text ads in several of the smaller bargain hunter papers opposed to an ad in a newspaper. Plus you carry alot more area coverage there in the for sale papers.

Word of mouth is a huge help. We also used to do free admission coupons for the radio stations to giveaway during the morning shows. Some were helpful some wanted us to buy ads and they would then give them away.

We also used to travel to other shows to promote ours. Give flyers to the vendors that are at others shows invite them to our show and ask to leave flyers on their tables. Keep in mind some show promoters do not like this so do what you can.

Free stuff also attracts people. Door prizes etc etc. You can also to an educational class etc etc to help maybe bring in new collectors. No matter what you do it's a gamble.

Also on another note I forgot to add you might consider expanding to doing stamps and ballcard and or comic vendors. Merge it into a coin and collectible show. We started off just reptiles and then went with the other animals and our attendance seemed to grow. So it might work in the Coin World. With something like that you keep the focus on the coins but also attract people that are collecting to begin with so they might enjoy the coin collecting end also.

Numismatic News will let you place a free ad...
We also place signs along the road and curtain intersection to guide traffic to us. Be sure to check with local laws before placing signage. Here the police will pick up sign NOT place correctly and throw them away. I use the corrugated plastic and a giant permanent marker and they last for years.( A little touch up once a year keeps them fresh looking)

I also advertise on the Internet... just Google free event listings.

I am the chairman for our club's two shows and feel your pain.
Good luck and let us know what works.

I don't agree with this at all !......Newspapers work great and that's some peoples first and/or only source for hearing about them.
I wouldn't sour on this If I were you IMHO.
The internet might be another source to try as well...
I think most people will travel under two hours driving time if the coin show/auction is worth it with a lot of various materials there.

We are going to try a survey to see where our general public get their information about the show.

By filling out the survey... they get into a FREE drawning.

They get a chance to win a coin and we get valuable information so we can mail out reminder postcards for the next show.
