My friend asked me to identify some cob coins. I've spent nearly 30 hours researching them and I'd like some feedback please. I am no expert and need some assistance.

I believe this coin is 1/2 reales from Peru Phillip II reign about 1577-1588. I went to Silvertowne and had it put on the xray gun to determine metal content. Metal content: 96%Ag 2.5%Cu 1.08%Au Mass 1.6g

This is coin 2

This can't be a Philip V, those were pillar coins, and this is the arms of Castille over the Jerusalem Cross making it much older.

Maybe Mexico around 1660-- http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/M...822#Philip_V

The crown on this coin does not match the 1700's Mexico coins, that is why I leaned towards Peru. What in particular makes you think Mexico? Is it the possiblility of the leftmost marks are OMJ?

It looks kind of like the Mexico Phillipus III in Sedwick's book, with the V above the bar. The reverse cross looks like Mexico. But the monogram looks crude. The letters are oddly placed. And the figure below the bar is just strange. It's supposed to look like a fleur de lys. Finally the teardrop shape is uncharacteristic.

Compare lots 754 and 755 in Sedwick's Auction 21 for good examples of real ones.

I'm suspicious of this one. If it is real I would value it at $25-50.

edit: Compare lots 823 -824 in Sedwick Auction 15. A teardrop example and similar placement of P,L and S. I'm less suspicious of your coin's authenticity, but given the condition I'll stick to a valuation of $25-50.

I should have specified: 1706-14 (rather than 1701)... Mexico, Philip V.
