Hello all,

Could anyone give me more information on this coin? It is much larger than a typical cash coin, as it weighs 24.84 grams and measures 47.5 mm across.

Reading the script, I can see that it was produced in Vietnam under Emperor Minh Mang (1820-41), but beyond that I have no clue, especially about it's size. Could it perhaps be a larger denomination?

Also, any information about it's potential value would be appreciated.

The cash coins were sometimes issued in multiple cash (2, 5, 10) denominations, and if so usually there would be some sort of indication on the coin itself.

I don't think coins were produced this large during the Minh Mang Era. The largest official cash coin I have of during his reign is a 9 Phan, roughly 26 mm. Other values were the 6 Phan, and 3 Phan that are about 1ish mm smaller than the other. But anyways, due to the patina and the size of the coin I think the coin was made for souvenir purposes rather than being a larger denomination.

Do you mean the coin is not genuine? I am always suspicious of any Asian coins, but this one is a surprise to me.

I have heard of 100, 200, and 500 cash denominations, could this just be one of those?

I've heard about those as well but weren't they not intended for the general circulation?

But as you stated the more rare a coin is the more replicas there are for Asian coins.
