I got this in a lot of coins off ebay recently. I didn't buy it for this coin because I didn't think it was legit. The lot came with a few offcenter strikes and a few die chip wheats for $10. This one is labeled "struck on mechanically damaged planchet". I haven't looked into that but never heard of it either. What do y'all think?

That is a lamination issue with the coin. It is legit. Note the ghost image under the 'Y'? That tells me it is not PSD.

Hey coop, I agree it's lamination BUT how did that piece of metal get pushed to the left and still be retained?
Would you consider a hit on the pre-strike planchet?

The circulation probably loosen it first on the bust, leaving it in place more on the fields with less contact because it is lower on the coin.

Nice lamination!

It looks like that extra metal is the remaining part of the peel after it folded and broke off post-strike.
