Made a bit more progress on the Elymais collection this afternoon with a win (on a really low bid) in an Numismatik Lanz auction on ebay. No big whoop, but it fills a collecting gap; I needed the type. Dealer pic below. Lanz apparently got his hanz - uh, hands - on a large hoard of recently dug up Elymaeans of all types, and he's been listing a few at a time. Most are pretty cruddy and in need of some TLC. This one, though far from perfect, fared the centuries better than most coins in the hoard.

Orodes IV
AE drachm
Circa second half of 2nd century AD
Obv: Bust facing forward, wearing diadem, large hair tuft on top and sides of head, pellet border
Rev: Bust of Artemis left, wearing low tiara with crest of dots, anchor to right, pellet border
Van't Haaff type 17.2 (can't pin it down any further since the number of crossbars on the anchor is the distinguishing feature needed to do so - and it's unclear on this specimen)

If anyone's interested, here's the slowly-growing Elymais collection so far, minus the coin above: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/ga...p?album=3637

Nice coin Bob!

And a great collection you've got there.

Do you know how many types there are to collect?

Thanks, guys. Dave, I never thought of that. I supposes the "fangs" are meant to be part of his beard. Paul, Van't Haaff list 21 basic types, many of which have numerous subtypes. Of those 21, types 1 - 6, consisting of coins from the early part of the Kamnaskirid Dynasty as well as a couple of usurpers, are nearly impossible to acquire due to their rarity.
