I think you're on to something. Maybe this embarrassment or whatever you'd call it is the reason folks don't like to spend "change".

I feel a little sheepish spending change too, but at the end of every month or 2 I end up with a pile of common nickels dimes and quarters.

Back in my high school days I used to work at a gas station in the evenings in a rather seedy part of the local big city and it was common to get paid in change (gas being much cheaper then ya know). It was kinda funny to see a car load of kids pull up and have everyone empty their pockets to see how much gas they could afford. I didn't mind so much since I was just sitting behind a counter and things usually weren't all that busy but I can see how a place like McDonalds or Wal Mart could get their shorts in a bunch over it. It is a hassle for the clerk to have to count out 5 or 10 dollars worth of cents, nicks, etc while everyone waits (you know if the guy in front of you did it you'd be cussing him). I can see paying with accurate change but there is a limit I think to what is reasonable.
