Thanks for your input. For what its worth, I inherited this, and know nothing about coin cleaning. I suppose that my Dad could have purchased this from a disreputable dealer. I am positive that he didn't clean it himself. Just out of curiosity, what makes you think that it has been cleaned?

The photos were taken in direct sunlight. It was a sunny day here in Alabama.

There is a fairly uniform pattern of abrasion on both sides of the coin. It is more severe on the obverse (shield side) than the reverse ("5" side). Nickels look metallic and reflect some light when they are intact. This coin has a dull whitish surface consistent with having been cleaned with an abrasive.
Coin cleaning does not always indicate malicious intent or an intent to deceive. Many coins were cleaned and in the past there were long periods when cleaning was acceptable. In the 18th and 19th centuries, people believed that germs hid in the crevices of coins. People still believe that now. It just reflects people's and some collectors' tastes at some point in time.
This is an almost uncirculated 141 year old coin with lots of detail remaining and still very nice.

It shows low-AU detail, but I am not convinced it was cleaned.

Agreed, especially in consideration of the light source. Sunlight can turn MS69 into MS61.
