I was wondering if anyone could talk about whether they felt common Indian cents would climb sharply over the next few years, or would remain roughly stagnant. In Jan 2007, commons nearly doubled in value, but not much has happened since. I know the keys have climbed and the 1909 has gone from being just barely above common price to like $10.

The one factor that I don't think would have a major impact is a potential lift on the ban on copper melting. Copper content is only worth a few cents apiece and yet common G Indians are worth $1-2 each, so numismatic value far outweighs it's potential melt value, should the copper melt ban be lifted.

So what sort of pressures would cause IHC to rise and which pressures would keep them stagnant?

One scenario I see possibly happening is that people get frustrated with the fact that Lincolns are so hot right now, choice examples are getting very difficult to find, and prices are climbing every day. In that frustration, they turn to the "other" small copper cent- the IHC.

I would say that you are correct in stating that any copper melting should not affect the IHCs since that would just be dumb to melt them for a couple cents worth of copper

If the predicted increased interest in Lincoln Cents with the design change in 2009 happens, the interest could easily "grow" to include Indian Head cents.

The State Quarter program has had a far-reaching effect on numismatic prices overall. The 2009 Cent design will probably not have a big overall effect, but just might affect IHCs. If it doesn't, then probably stagnant Indian prices.

I recall Rick Snow commenting somewhere that key IHCs are currently very hot. I do know on his price list, that the IHC 09-S went from $650 in XF45 to $750 for this year. There is also an IHC 1888/7 that sold for just shy of $125K. That may be a record.

Personally, I think metal prices would exert little upward pressure since even bulk IHCs are worth far more than copper content.

hoarders and collectors make availability limited while more collectors are interested; so the prices should keep going up over the next decade at least.

PCGS shows no up/down indicators today for IHCs. I suspect they'll appreciate slowly until the brouhaha about the new cent design vs. Lincoln dies down in 2010-11.
Meanwhile, collectors will, "Gonuts for Donuts!" ..errrr.............I mean priority 1909 (IHC& Lincoln) and other Lincolns.
