*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***This is interesting because I have found two coins of different composition. The steel looking one sticks to a magnet, copper obviously does not. Any idea where these are from? The bright one has either aluminum or steel composite, can't find any info on where these were minted.

Both coins counter stamped and as John mentioned one is plated. Please crop your pictures and rid of excess back grounds like example below.

Thanks. What is a counter stamp and how common are they? Either stamping or plating mint sanctioned?

Very common during the bi-centennial period.

It was plated after it left the U.S. mint. Type counter stamped in the search box upper left of page for lots of info. John1

Nickel plated as 100% nickel is magnetic and shines as bright as chrome!!

There are collectors of counter stamps, but not many. It is an inexpensive pursuit because most counter stamped reduce the value for many coins.

Quote: There are collectors of counter stamps, but not many. It is an inexpensive pursuit because most counter stamped reduce the value for many coins. Exactly. And in your case both of your coins have been severely damaged on reverse due to the force used to hammer the stamping on the obverse. But they are still keepers, good ones for show and tell.

Fascinating, thanks for the information y'all. Pretty wacky to get one that was electroplated.

Yes, the one of the left has been plated. Still, nice finds!

I have two of these coins, with the certificate, also. In 1976, U.S. Steel Corporation had an open house. The U.S. mint issued these coins for that purpose. Everybody that toured got one of these. The back that is smudged is where it was glued to the authentication certificate. By the way, the tour was outstanding.
