Hello fellow collector's, Ive been putting together a Unc JFK folder, using sets and roll coins.I came up on 70 and had two sets to work from, one was nice and came from CCC the other was a ebay buy and from outward appearance was not as nice.from outside the film it appeared like the half had a abrasion mark from the philly set rubbing against it but when I removed it from the plastic it looked to me to be a cracked die error. I wish I could put it up for you's to veiw but my digicam is not up to the challenge. so I will explain it to you.the crack starts 2mm above and right of the top of the ear slighting bowing to the 11 oclock stopping 1mm below the top of the head.the width of the crack is mild about the size of 6 pound fishing line,it terminates at the top to the size of a human hair no longer defined but squiggly.has anybody ever seen this on a 70-D? please let me know... thanks Scott

I'm working on it,I've got my eye on an affordable digital microscope.
tried taking a pic thru a magnifying glass but when I went to load it up I could not find the right usb cable to see the results. story of my life lately.i will see if my sons samsung will do a better job, if I can find him. if I should get a image I will be sure to get it on this page. Scott

It would be pretty unusual to be a die break. Not only are they uncommon on mint set coins but they are extremely uncommon without originating in the fields and extending to or toward the rim. Usually they point toward a deep part of the design like the ear though.

Is it possible that it's a piece of wire or debris which got between the die and the planchet?

Thank's for the good info, I found a inexpensive digital microscope in a optics catalog today and will order it next week. if this thread is still going I will post the image.I wish I would have kept it in the wrap though. it seems your explanation is probably right. if so I wonder does that make it an error coin, or more like anybody could damage a coin and try to pass it of as a cracked die variety?
Sorry so late on the reply, I've been down at the post office missending people's correspondents. On our breaks they let us go over to the press and help out on the 08 silver eagle order's.

If there was debris in the coining chamber then the line will be incuse and it will be considered an error. Usually these will have a higher price than a die break but unusual die breaks might get some bidder attention.
