I approve. Quote: American voters support these changes. Recent polling shows that nearly 70 percent of Republicans, independents and Democrats alike support switching from the dollar note to a dollar coin when informed of the taxpayer savings.

I'd be happy to see it happen. Sometimes stupid takes a long time to change.

I approve too but I say we go further and eliminate the nickel as well instead of just changing it's composition since it will end up costing more in the future to make. Might as well take it out and begin taking the savings now.
I also say we also put the half dollar and two dollar bills back into mass circulation as well. If it is cost prohibitive, (even though I enjoy spending them like a lot of others here) then lets get rid of them too.

In our case, a very, very, very, very long time.

I know I'm chasing a rabbit here, but I wish the news media would quit calling unaffiliated voters "independents." If you look up the Independent party, you will see that it is a right-wing political group with its own unique identity. Those of us in the GenX age group remember that party and I don't identify. It is nearly extinct, but a fact is a fact is a fact. By the way: I support moving to the dollar coin 100%. Sorry, George!

I would definitely support these changes! Just as long as they keep making cents in Proof sets for collectors :)

There have been Dollar coins in circulation for the last 46 years. Do you know anyone aside a collector who uses them in commerce?

You can read S.759 here https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th...ill/759/text (it's short, only 1 page). I thought the following excerpt was interesting Quote: (e) Exception.—Notwithstanding subsections (b) and (c), the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System shall produce such Federal Reserve notes of $1 denomination as the Board of Governors determines from time to time are appropriate solely to meet the needs of numismatic collectors of that denomination. Such collectible versions of $1 Federal Reserve notes shall be sold in accordance with other general provisions governing collectible versions of notes. Looks like in addition to removing circulating $1 FRNs, they want to establish NIFC $1 FRNs, but what would "from time to time" mean? every year? every even decade? whenever the treasury needs a revenue boost from the numismatic community?

There is no reason to have NIFC one dollar notes. Just get rid of them already.

If there is no reason for NIFC one dollar notes, there is no reason for NIFC cents or half dollars either. So just get rid of all of them.

I am not a fan of NIFC coinage, at least in Mint and Proof sets. Commemoratives are fine but Mint and Proof Sets are supposed to reflect the current circulation coinage. When the penny is finally dumped (as well as the nickel) it should also be dropped from the Mint and Proof sets. Dollars and Halves should only be included if they are actually minted that year for circulation.
If the paper dollar is dropped from circulation it should be dropped period. AFAIK they do not make "Mint Sets" or NIFC issues for paper money so I don't think that is an issue.
