Regardless of the reason, the corrosion is eating that coin up. I'd guess acid too.
It is NOT a metal detector find unless it went into the ground already looking like this.

Looks as if it was once in a bad fire.

@amber, with the black scale on the surface, my initial thought was fire too. Regardless of whether it was wear, acid, burial, fire, or a combination of those indignities, your coin has lost some of its initial mass. It is a Wheat cent, so probably a slight premium to face value for some folks.

Yep, that coin has been through a lot of mistreatment. I agree with the other members' assessments. Quote:It is a Wheat cent, so probably a slight premium to face value for some folks. ...probably not in that condition. I think it's worth one cent at most (if you can spend it).

The fist thing I thought was fire too. A house fire gets to temperatures that begin to "smelt" the copper alloy. This burns off some of the impurities that actually keep the coin from oxidization quickly. This coin has oxidized , meaning oxygen molecules have "left the building", copper has began separating and falling off because the cohesive elements have been changed. The scale may increase the thickness, but it weighs less than the metal its replacing. A very scientific answer, but is nothing more than chemistry and physics, well, metallurgy, ore proceccing, ...

This is indeed severe environmental damage. My first guess would also be fire, although I'm not excluding acid.

Corrosion... You have nothing to lose with this coin. Do you want to experiment with it? Dip the coin in CLR for 24 hours ... and see what happens .
