1891-Straits-Settlements-10-Cents

Bought from a local shop for around USD30...
What is the grade of this coin? I'm still a newbie collector
Is it good enough to be XF? According to Krause's catalogue the XF worths $90! I immediately bought this coin considering the hairlines look intact.

Also.. how much is it worth? It's obviously cleaned right?

Thanks!
Rest in Peace

EF, details, harshly cleaned.

Figure half of book for the harsh cleaning.

This would probably sell for $25-30. But you can explore the sold prices on ebay to get a closer current value. Go by sold, not completed.

Beware that fakes have been produced of these.
I am unfamiliar with this series, but from the pictures, the field surfaces look a little 'iffy', relative to the common dates I have seen for this type.

There is good detail in the devices, but the fields look a little as if they have been shot blasted. That can be said of the small flat surfaces of the letters as well.

Perhaps it is just harsh cleaning; I have to leave room to say that I am not completely sure.

Laser optic profiling to produce a cyber model which is referred to,
to control spark erosion die cutting, can produce what can be seen here. IF this is the case, (I have to repeat: I amt not really sure), the surfaces of the fake die should been smoothed before using such a die to strike 'coins'.

I allow myself to stand to be corrected.

Thanks for your input sel, but looking at the items he sells, a fake seems unlikely.

He sells mostly local finds (even non-coin items such as ceramicware found on rivers, ancient beads, etc).So it is very unlikely that he buys and resells fakes.

He also has two other similar coins from around the same mint year listed at $28 but much worse condition (around F or VF maybe, not more). They look pretty legit with some old dark grey patinas.

But anyways, nothing is impossible.
Rest in Peace

You may be right, SEL. Those surface abrasions, particularly evident on the reverse, don't seem to cross from the fields to the design elements. Too, none of those lines are parallel which is usually evident on almost any mechanical cleaning.

But the RPM is evident, the denticles seem good, the wear patterns seem consistent with minor circulation.

Any chance you can weigh this GuyBrush?

Hello I've weighed the coin... 2.70 grams.

Also, is this luster in the video? Is it possible that the luster persists after such cleaning? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biYEjinr5xw
