Hello, I have been unable to identify this coin that I received from my late grandfather 20 years ago. It has tested positive for gold but has no writing an only the faint pictures on the front and back. I have no idea where he acquired it as he traveled frequently. I have always believed it to be from Central or South America but have no clue. It weighs 13.2 grams.

Best guess is an anonymous, post-Alexander issue from Macedon:

I've only seen that design used on silver and bronze, and nothing approaching 13g. Gold in that era was mostly confined to the 8 gram stater, so this weight doesn't make much sense for a gold coin. I suspect it might be a fantasy. Hopefully a Greek expert can chime in!
Rest in Peace

It would be rare for a coin with a significant gold percentage to corrode as this coin has. Note spots of verdigris.

That thought crossed my mind as well.
A favorable density test would allay those fears.

Unfortunately, I currently have a server access problem to Wildwinds.

@skbshad, first welcome to CCF. Second, that is an interesting piece you have there. I wonder if you could also post a couple pics of the edge? Thx.

Welcome to the community

The coin appears to be an ancient Greek coin from Macedon and depicts a Shield with the head of Gorgon in the center on the obverse, and a Macedonian helmet on the reverse.
