Just wondering about this coin. Copper layer is missing (not plated) and could it be from mint or some chemistry experiment. Coin shows typical light corrosion on zinc surface (light pimples, not pits), and is correct color for a lightly corroded zinc surface. Scratches on coin show no sign of copper. There is a small groove around the rim where some copper does appear, though, which is the confusing part to me, and traces on the rim surface itself. Flow lines are clear and sharp as if that was the surface of the coin when minted, but can a coin be minted with just a little bit of copper in a groove around the rim from some Die Deterioration issue? Anyway, thanks for looking and comments welcome.

It did not leave the mint like that,it is PSD. A real missing copper plating will have mint luster, cartwheel effect on it. John1

It looks like a metal detector find, coin shows heavy corrosion due to environmental damage with the copper layer disappearing from obverse and the Zinc being exposed. The heavy soil acidity can eat thru. the copper.

Check out the plethora of YouTube videos on reverse electroplating, or any of the "how to remove copper layers", LJ again?

I can see why you would ask. But this is damage rather than missing plating from the mint.

Always good to ask when you're not sure! Anyway, I share the opinion that it's PMD.
