I don't know much about it, but I do know that there was a big coin shortage in Italy in the mid-1970s and this led to the production of local bills such as this one. Postage stamps and items of low value like sweets were also sometimes given in change when shops ran out of coins.

Thanks NumisRob. It just seems odd to me for the date that it's not (apparently) national currency but, a bank issued note. I know nothing of the financial situation in Italy at that time.

NumisRob is right. This is Italian 'notgeld', emergency money. In this case 100 Lira from the Tuscany region, or more specific "the regional union of commerce and turism of Tuscany".

Thanks UltraRant, that helps me understand Notgeld more because I don't have any. My mother actually told me that she thought it was something my father brought back. I have no knowledge of him going to Italy but, who knows? He would have been 21 at that time and that's well before my birth.

That's a great link, Dorado. Thanks! It's interesting to me because my stepmother is an Italian who grew up in Venezuela and moved to the U.S. for college. Her mother was raised in Trieste and hence her grandmother endured WWII there. Here are a couple pics of them. My step-grandmother (Maria) as a young girl and her mother (Mirella). I've interacted with them both but, Mirella only spoke Italian and liked to pinch my cheek. Unfortunately, she has passed but, was present at her great-granddaughter's wedding (my stepsister) just a couple years ago. It's amazing to me to see four generations of a family present in one place and time. I have no idea about the monkey.

@ Spruett001, the photos are lovely! Thank you for sharing your family history with us! That 100 lire note you have is issued during the coin shortage period in Italy when the Government did not mint enough coins to go around. I think it lasted for maybe 3 to 5 years---cannot remember exact years but it happened in the 1970s. NumisRob and Ultrarant are correct. Many tourists were confused by many different "notgelds" during this period. Nice to have a piece of history from Italy! PS Since you have a familial connection with Venezuela, they also had emergency 1, 2 and 5 bolivar notes in late 1980s and early 1990s because there were not enough 1, 2 and 5 bolivar coins to go around. (Hard to believe because my friend bought coins back to me without any difficulties...maybe he was lucky?)

Thanks for the comments! @Carrigna I may actually have one of those 1 bolivar notes you mentioned. I also have a couple 100 bolivar notes and just a few coins. I'll take a look and see what I have. I just finished sorting through Mexico so, I haven't gotten to the V's yet.

Hi Spruett001! You are more than welcome! Please do get in touch with me when I have more than 50 posts. I might have some Venezuelan notes for you. I am not sure if I have any extra coins. :) It is such a shame that their currencies (think they are on "third" bolivar now) lose so much value since early 2000s. :( Looking forward to your posts! They are good to read!

Here's the bolivar note I was thinking of. It's 1989: Here are the two 100 bolivar notes. Unfortunately, the bottom one has been laminated. My step mom gave it to me probably 20 years ago: I actually only have one Venezuelan coin but, it happens to be a 1990 bolivar: Quote: It is such a shame that their currencies (think they are on "third" bolivar now) lose so much value since early 2000s. :( That's part of the reason my step grandmother and great-grandmother emigrated to the U.S. from Caracas. I can't remember when that happened, probably mid-2000s. I'm glad they got out when they did considering the current state of affairs there.
