I've been checking on ebay for error coins. When I come upon some REALLY bogus entries, those portraying a damaged coin being pawned off as a real error get under my craw tremendously. So, I have taken to sending the following email to the seller in hopes of correction, high hopes yes. I so far have had a whopping two favorable responses, one removed the listing, another did indeed ask for some help, but still waiting on any follow through on their part. I really only wish to help, not slam or bash any collector, just get it right, please. Here's my most recent message and coin examples. Think this is too much? Or should I just forget it? Quote: New message to: kle4647 Hi, from a fellow error coin collector
I would be willing to help you identify what a true error coin actually is, if you so choose to have my assistance. The examples of most of your error coins are not listed in the Cherry-Pickers guide nor numerous other error coin references within the numismatic community. Your coins are nothing more than common circulation or environmental damages.
Please let me know if you do need some help, I am willing to advise if needed. Error coin Collecting can be quite enjoyable if the coins are truly a recognized and valuable error. Thank you for your diligent attention to correct these erroneous listings.
Hopefully, a new friend

At the risk of sounding cynical, I would imagine that most people selling fake errors know exactly what they are doing. I'm glad for your hard work to make numismatics a better hobby, but your task reminds me of someone from Greek mythology...

Yeah, ebay sellers are getting worse and worse when trying to sell supposed "error coins". It's good that you're telling them though. Sometimes the coins on here are pretty bogus.

Spence, then think if no one like Bobby and some others here were to stop reporting the counterfeits to ebay, just what would happen to it more than it already is?

I'm a cynic as well, and believe they generally know exactly what they're up to.

Fully agree with Spence here, don't become yet another on line Sisyphus. It's a noble cause, but they know exactly what they're doing. It's the internet, it's like chasing ghosts.

We get a lot of first time folks here that believe their junk is gold even after exhaustive explanations to the contrary.

A couple of years ago I had a problem with a seller trying to pass off a VF IHC as Choice AU . This got me so annoyed that I contacted him and told him my thoughts about his coin and that I can help him in his grading . Bad mistake ! He e-mailed me back and in so many words ,told me to go to ( HECK ). E-mailed him again and told him I'm not a fool ,I really want to help you ,thinking maybe he knows nothing about coin grading . Well he gave me a song and a dance and basically told me I don't know my nose from my elbow . So think twice old buddy about sending that out .

I would just forget it. ebay is what it is - for every one person you get through to there are 10 more that pop up right behind them. I guess though if you have the time - go for it!

Cynics BEWARE! Just received this message in response to the original posting: Quote:Dear crazyb-0, I would love to be educated about the coins my father and I have collected over the past 20 years in the bar business. I have a shoe box full of oddities. I was under the impression that there a two kinds of errors , mint errors and after mint errors. The quarter you are showing came in a brand new roll of State Quarters, I sold one similar that was out of a roll of Georgia State Quarters, except the back on that coin was perfect only the front showed excessive wear. I don't state that they are mint errors. Any help here would be appreciated. Thank you. - kle4647 Here's part of my response: Quote: I'm part of a forum that is great for coin "edjukashun"..LOL! I actually have a book about Mint Doubling and soon will have an error coins companion available to download. There are members who are industry experts there as well. Coin community family is what it's called, check it out, become a member, ask your questions, we're actually nice too! Score one for the Home Team!

I am convinced that ebay would be completely full of fakes if it weren't for our members being vigilant and then bobby getting those auctions pulled. I see now that you have had a little success, so that is really good. Congrats, that is really great. I just hope that it doesn't turn into a giant game of whack-a-mole for you.

Back yard shed job coin 'errors' are one of the richest areas of ebay numismatic fraud. At least, they provide a good test and education on how to identify them, and thus how to avoid them.

I've sent a few messages like that before trying to inform sellers about their "errors" with no success or even response for that matter. If you have the time to do so, then go for it. I can't even get people to take a minute to leave feedback!

This guy has been trying to sell his "error" quarter for many years now with no luck. I wonder why? https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/282702494162Granted, it's a legitimate, yet quite common error that is unique by nature, but $100k unique? I think not.
