I know something about coins...but not a whole lot.

What is this "thing"?

The coin (if that is what it is) is bimetallic like a Lincoln Cent. The obverse is blank, but the reverse has wording around the periphery like a cent. The diameter is 19 mm, thickness about 3/4 mm, and the weight is 1.9 grams. Both sides have a pimple of raised metal in the center. Is this a messed up coin from the mint, or something else?

Sorry for the lousy photographs.

Thanks for your time. All responses will be greatly appreciated.

Heat treated looks like, then notice the center "dot" on both sides, was in a machine mount like a lathe and ground...nonetheless was attacked!

Robert, first welcome to CCF. Second, that coin started out as a cent when it left the mint, but someone has played around with it. Specifically, they have worn away most of the features on the rev and all of the features on the obv. It doesn't look like a belt sander job to me due to the small raised area in the center of both sides. I would expect something like that from a lathe. I'm sure there will be other plausible explanations for how this PMD occured.

How ever it was done, the result is the same--you have a barely recognizable cent with only face value. With all of that exposed zinc, this coin will start to rot pretty quickly--I'd spend it!

I think I'd like to see that. I think I'll put it on a shelf in the garage.

That's a train wreck!

Sorry, couldn't resist. It looks like the perfect candidate if you want to see zinc rot.
