Ancient Indian Mauryan Empire silver punchmarked karshapana, circa 250 BC.
Value around $30.

Google
'Maurayan Empire' for background information.

@daj, very nice pick-up. You can see that these coins have been posted here on CCF several times in the past. Here are a couple of my favorite threads:

The Mauryan Empire was briefly the largest single political entity in the world, and also controlled an enormous silver supply. These are hands down the easiest to acquire and cheapest silver coins from before 200 BC; they must have made millions and millions of these.

Since you asked for details, the punches have been catalogued, but are not yet understood. There are usually 5 on the obverse, and one on the reverse, which could either indicate which king it was struck under, or else could be a mintmark. The denomination is a Karshapana, sometimes erroneously equated to a drachm; it was about 3.5g versus 4.2g for an Attic drachm.

This is an interesting example. The single mark on the reverse is believed to be the mint mark, usually it's three bales for the Taxila mint. This one has a mint mark that I haven't seen before.
