The coin is a 1971 S PCGS PR67 Kennedy half labeled as Minor Variety DDO. Variety Vista has all 20 DDO varieties listed, but only has photos of one minor variety. Is there a source to dig deeper into this? I've looked at the whole obverse with a 10X loupe, and can't see anything that helps id the variety. Someone somewhere must know what these look like. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Ed

My recommendation would be to submit it to J.Wexler. I am not sure if you'd be able to find any reference on it, as I have had similar issues in the past with these type DD's,particularly on the Kennedy halves and Ikes. Yours may be the result of a WHO ( Working Hub Doubling) since it is just referred to as Minor Variety DDO.

This is a matter that took me 3 separate variety attribution submissions to come to understand how PCGS attributes variety coins.

In a nutshell, they have a "list" of known doubled die varieties with individual markers and PUP's that should be observed on each depending on its particular die state and if they've determined that it is indeed a doubled die but can't match your submission to any on their "list" it is given the attribution "DDO(or DDR) Minor Variety"

Even if you send in detailed information about the attribution you are seeking, it will not get labeled as such, unless it's on their list. So basically...it's a big waste of money.

I agree with Chase007 on this. It's a DDO, but most likely WHO (Working Hub Doubling) If you do submit this to John A. Wexler, make sure to update this post if you do send it in.

Thanks for all the help. How would I go about submitting it to Mr Wexler?

As far as I know no one has described any WHO's (working hub obverses) for the Kennedy 1971-S. Have you tried using the CONECA Master Listings to attribute your half dollar? Using the descriptions and listed markers you should be able to attribute it. If not, post some photos of the doubling, like the ST of TRUST, E of LIBERTY, and the I of IN. I might be able to help you since I have 19 of the CONECA listed 20 in my collection to compare them with. Your best bet if you want to send it to someone would be CONECA, James Wiles.

Thanks again, for the link.

@atrox001, yes as I mentioned, have been over all the Coneca Varieties, and can't match it using the descriptions or markers. I can't even see any doubling anywhere using 10-15x loupe....so no use posting pics yet. Will go over the Master Listings again, and will get out the usb microscope. That's pretty impressive that you have 19/20 varieties. Congrats. If I come up with nothing after the second go, will consider sending it to someone. Does PCGS actually look at these?....somtimes I think they just take the word of the submitter, and print the label :-/
