Are the Presidential dollar coins worth roll searching through or buying from the bank? What should I be looking out for, if anything? Seems to me the banks have them readily available. But there's probably a reason for that.

There were so many minted. They want people to use dollar coins and retire the dollar bill. -64s

I wouldn't waste your time getting these. They are ugly and they are not even being used in circulation.

I had some good luck searching through Presidential dollar rolls. I found a number of Die Cracks and a really cool Die Break. Some consider it a waste of time, but I see it this way; since I only purchase the rolls at face value, I'm not loosing any money on it. I have found a lot of enjoyment searching through these rolls, whether I find anything or not.

I buy one roll of each release (p & d) and pick out the four best looking ones, one for me and one for each of my kids. The rest get put back into circulation.

They mint so many of these coins, keep some if you like them. I do! All I am keeping is 2 sets from each mint is all.

I live in a smaller city and they are really hard to come by. Because of the size of the banks, not that many make it here and a majority of banks do not get in coin as their regular shipment. We have only one coin dealer and they charge 2x because of where they have to bring them in from. So for me it is only worth a couple of each and no where near the price of a roll. The other thing I have noticed is how easy they are to mark up and damage, so because of that it may be worth looking through a few rolls to get some nicer coins.
I lucked out with the first washingtons and bought a roll, but only had a few that were worth keeping. The rest have ended up with babysitters and gas stations. If I can just keep my book up to date and 1 or 2 extra then I will be happy.

I would stop short of saying they are a waste of time and calling them ugly; but they are very difficult to find in circulation. If you like them, collect them; hit every bank you can to find them. Just do not expect them to appreciate in value anytime soon.
