May just be me, but close up images of just the MM alone kind of ties my hands perception a bit. Markers are not always present from this view. Thanks, Doug.

I agree with the damage on upper portion, is it your opinion that the lower split serif is due to damage as well? just curious.Thanks.

See what you mean with the top three sites. Not seeing a match to the RPM or damage punch resembling this one. Maybe unlisted, but will keep looking. John1 has seen a lot more than I. Thanks, Doug.

What mint employees used to punch mintmarks into dies was damaged in 1979. Most, if not all, coins from 1979 have that "split" lower serif.

On another coin site in Dec. 2008 coppercoins makes reference to - Quote: The notch in the lower serif is very common, it's damage on the mintmark punch. The above mentioned reference opened another question for me. Quote: Explains it all http://goccf.com/t/252494Does it mean all with a lower notch are discounted? Only ask because of MM location on coin seen in link seems to have potential to be one that is listed and inquiring about the potential upper notch(s). Thanks, Doug. Adding: forgot to mention a tiny lower notch is present on other denominations as well, indicating one particular punch had been in use on them as well.

Quoting from "Looking Through Lincoln Cents" by Charles Daughtrey it says: Quote:Because the only mintmark used during this time (1977-1979) was in Denver, and because the mintmark was little more than an insignificant dot, repunched mintmarks are also nearly non-existent. only two mintmarks are known for the 1979D cents...in fact, 1077 and 1978 represent the first two years in the Lincoln Cent series with no known die varieties. Of the two listed, BOTH have split serifs, with an S.
