I haven't ever seen this before so I'm hoping for a little education. It appears as though they include a stamp from a certain period and a little history on the encased silver dollar.

Main question I have, is there any added value in this packaging or should I remove the coin from this tomb.....

Thanks...

@srs77, in a quick search, it looks like this topic has only come up one other time on CCF:

Thanks Spence, I did a search and nothing came up so I'm happy that you found an entry. I'd like to hear whether I should leave them in this packaging or break them out. I guess as long as there is no additional value to it I could break them out.

That is exactly what I would do--so much easier to fit into a 2x2 that way.

They are called "First Day Covers". Very little collection value unless you collect the specific issue set. These are usually done through Private business, Like a Littleton series Issue. You Might try fishing on ebay to see if anyone has that set snd may want it, not likely tho. There must be hundreds of different issued "sets", to have a wild one like that, not to much interest. If you had five in a set someone might thinking to snag the others somehow. Wouldn't be loosing anything to free it, stamps ain't worth much either.

Some like yhe 76 $2 w/ cancelled stamp on first day of issue may be worth $5...

These are quite popular on ebay, I have seen a wide range of dates from 1878 to 1935, including some better dates, some CC's, 78 8TF's, etc.

These are event cover, celebrating or honoring certain event took place at that specific date, as the US stamp collectors dwindles, so are the value of most philatelic items, only the rare items stay in value, over time I would wonder if that would be the case.

I believe the postal system stop the stamp collecting by going self adhesive stamps, while China stamp collector top coin collectors because the stamps are still made the traditional ways.

That said, I would also agree breaking out of the envelope wont loose any value.
