The last Roman emperor!

The rest of the lineup is breathtaking too... very rare issues of the 12 Caesars, Pacatianus, Dryantilla, Uranius Antonius, Galla Placidia, and just about all of the last puppet-emperors!

From what I have seen, I fully expect this coin to top $30-50k. The two on Wildwinds sold for $155,000 and $22,000.

Still, the fact that non-unique US ultra-rarities put coins like these to shame just blows my mind. I mean, regardless of how tough a 1992 Close AM is to find, this is the teenager who surrendered the Roman purple to the barbarians and ushered in the Dark Ages. Simply no comparison in my mind.

It would be nice to have that kind of money to bid on a coin, but than again if I did I wouldn't spend it on one coin.

It is interesting that my Seaby catalogue from 1954 lists that item at 100 pounds in VF. So that is roughly a 100 times appreciation. The most common ancient Roman coins are listed at 5 shillings, which now might sell for $10-20. That is an appreciation of 15-30 times. So that tends to prove the adage that you should get rare coins.
