I have always liked the Braided Hair Large Cent and I've been contemplating for some time now to start collecting them. What has held me back is (like all coin's) the higher the grade the higher the cost. I had to decide if I would be happy with lower grades (like really low) considering my budget. Well, I've made up my mind that yes, I could be happy with that so I purchased my first one. I paid $10 including shipping. the seller had it listed as fine but I'm thinking more like G-VG considering the dings, dents, scratches Ect... So, here it is. your thoughts? BTY, the color is closer to the second pic. still trying to figure out the lighting. Edited by Tootallious 10/30/2017 3:15 pm

Rims are kinda beat up but price seems very fair.

Keep an eye out for LC that has evidence of more circulation and less dings and marks. This has a few distractions, but certainly a good buy.

Thank you Coinfrog and moxking!! I need to be a little more patient as I'm sure I could have found one with less damage for the same price. I'm hoping to purchase 1 a month providing price is right and funds available.

rims are a bit chewed up but overall not bad for $10. Looks like it has VG-10 to F-12 sharpness. Might need to buy a book such as Grellmans to start attributing. Looks like N-5 because of the 8 and 4 touching. R-1 rarity.

Quote: Now try and attribute it Well, I'm pretty sure that it's a mature head, large letters. other than that I've searched for information on varieties, not much for this year as far as I have found other than buying a book or two which I plan on in the future. If you know a web site or have a link to one I would appreciate it. Thank you!

It takes time to develop a discerning eye. Best to practice on low-value coins like this.

I just checked around for that book and I'm a little shocked at the price . I have never paid $100+ for a book nor will I ever. I'll have to find a used one some where but thank you for the info!

Sometimes I go to NGC Variety Plus online, they have photos of most varieties.

Quote: coin books can be pricey! Yea, I had no idea! Grellmans book is also privately published therefore allowing him to put any price he desires on it.
