My first post here. Hello, dear community! Here's a story. I went to my favorite coin store yesterday. A very friendly establishment in a small town in the SF Bay Area. I check out what I want, then go to what I lovingly call the "reject tray." You know, the kind of tray with coins they give away for 10c a piece. I get a bunch of coins that, based on my recollection, I wouldn't have, then head home.

At home, I put coins in 2x2 holders, then write down their basic info (country-year-denomination-metal), then google their mintage. There is this one coin - an aluminium coin from Italy - 10 lire 1947 - that looks like a regular aluminium coin from the post-war period. Its mintage .... 12,000. The Krause catalogue value for VF is $500. My coin is at least XF, which, according to the catalogue, is worth $900. Got it for 10 cents.

My 30th birthday is coming up. I am loving the present!

And yes...

It sounds like an amazing score and believable. Who woulda thunk an aluminum coin could be worth so much!

Congratulations, what a great find! I do believe you are vastly under-grading your coin. It's a bit hard to tell from your pics because they're a bit out of focus but I'd say our coin is close to MS (I'd peg it at Au55 only because of the flatness on the part where the wing connects to the front leg/shoulder of the horse). There is a bit of a dip/indentation on the left knee of the horses leg which is atypical (almost looks like a water droplet), but this is still a very lovely coin and certainly a great buy for 10 cents :)

I highly recommend you get this graded.

@Bukharan
Congratulations, excellent find!

It seems to be authentic for me, but please check the inscription on the edge, it should look like this.

Happy-Discovery:-Italy-10-Lire-1947

Check the weight if you can , it should be 3 gs., there is a known counterfeit that weighs 3.39 gs.

and

Thank you, all!

@Cableguy815, I plan to submit the coin for grading at some point. The reason why this coin attracted my attention in the first place is the surprisingly good quality and nice lustre on both sides, in contrast to what it was surrounded by.

@Cara, thank you for the information! I greatly appreciate it. The edge of the coin appears as the picture above. Also, 3g exactly!

It seems like it's time to submit it for authentication & grading. Well done!

Let us know what happens.

Wow! A truly fantastic find!

I love the 20th century Italian designs that revisit classical themes. Nothing more iconic than the pegasus. And to find a 1947 in the bargain bin is quite amazing. Congratulations!
