Called "Split Plate Doubling", is just damage. The sharp edge of the device cut the thin copper plating showing the zinc core. Note also the "slide doubling" MD on date, shows a directional movement causing that split D
I don't consider this as slide doubling. It looks more like the classic Machine Doubling. Slide doubling is a lot stronger: http://www.error-ref.com/?s=slide+doubling Note the slide doubling distorts the devices and you can see metal striation lines on the altered devices.
