I've always really disliked the brass Belgian 5 Franc coin that was first issued in 1986

That was actually my first foreign coin. I can still remember finding it on a residential street in California, around 25 years ago. I agree that they're not attractive, but I now have about a dozen of them.

My least favorite coins are probably post-WW2 German Pfennigs.

with NumisRob, the Belgian 5 franc was the first coin that came to my mind when I saw this thread.

As others have said - Euros! I'm glad the UK didn't adopt the euro.. admittedly, were not much better these days.

That coin does look rather odd.

I think it looks like the kind of token you get in a carwash or in an amusement arcade. I think Belgium must be the only country whose coin designs improved when they adopted the Euro!
Given the evidence presented, I have to agree.

I happen to like the Effigy Mounds.

Of all the 50 States and ATB Quarter designs, the Effigy Mounds is the worst.

My vote goes to the Wyoming State Quarter.

For the Statehood Quarters, I agree. Those two are polar opposites of each other as far as artistic approach. The Wyoming quarter looks heavily worn from day one. If they had added a little three dimensional touch to the horse and rider, it would have been much better.

To each their own.

I wouldn't say I 'can't stand' the SBA Dollar, but I just find it comical. SBA herself probably never considered space travel yet the obverse is the Apollo missions theme. It is a hilariously bad pairing that I like, strictly because it's a bad pairing.

The presidential bus tokens...er, I mean dollars. I really think there could have been a much better design for the series.

I have actual tokens that look better than those. Forget the "golden" color and make it a large dollar again. I would rather have a large CuNi dollar than those. There is no reason for a base metal dollar coin to be smaller than a base metal half dollar. Except for the "fiat" part.

Another series of coins I dislike are the last Dutch circulating Guilders before they joined the Euro. The minimalist designs looked OK on the smaller coins, like the 5c and 10c, but the 2.5 Guilder coin looked really unattractive, especially after a few years in circulation:

Let's switch it up:
Greek Drachmes notes, last issues before the Euro. You see them everywhere and they are often in rough condition. They are completely worthless since they cannot be exchanged anymore, the designs are of the typical 1970's/80's style and just look boring. Coins are much more interesting and they too are kind of boring.

Up close they might look nice but in worn bunches they look horrible and boring.

Problem is, they could not. It is a Wyoming symbol.

Yeah flat and boring. Hey come on, at least on the west side of the state there is a little relief to the surface.

I think the Susan B. Anthony dollar ranks right up there on the ugly scale.

I'm not that keen on the post-2008 British circulating coins that make up the parts of the shield. I'm getting used to them now, but I still prefer the original Ironside decimal coin designs
