Hi,

I inherited some coins and thought this forum would be the right place to come for advice, so here I am!

The coins are from South Africa, and are in a commemorative case. There is a certificate with them. There are four coins - 1.09 oz (one ounce fine gold content), 0.55 oz (one half ounce fine gold content), 0.27 oz (one quarter fine gold content) and 0.11 oz (one tenth ounce fine gold content).

Is there much value in these? Would be looking to sell them as not interested in keeping them.

I'm located in Auckland, NZ.

Chris

Hi Chris I ve seen these sold with little premium over spot price. You will have no problem selling your set on ebay if you choose.

These are medals, not coins. Or perhaps one could call them "fantasy coins" or "reproductions", since they loosely copy the design of an old ZAR coin from 1784.

I've never heard of the "Africana Commemorative Mint". Googling it, they seem to have been a Franklin-Mint-style mas-marketeering private mint at the height of the world coin craze in the 1970s. I can;t tell if they were actually based in South Africa or were based elsewhere and simply sold South African themed objects.

Hi, if my quick calculations are correct, this set contains roughly 2 ounces AU.
Same set was on auction (South African version of E-bay) in April this year with an opening bid of ZAR39,990.00

No bid was placed ...

Hi Chris, I was informed by Mr. Peter Bowles, SA's leading numismatist that these proof gold medallions (22k) were actualy struck by the SA Mint to commemorate president Burger.
