Nice selection, some of those 5 sen are hard to find. I'd take a closer look at that one yen coin. Some of the details on the obverse seem mushy.

Arkie, Wheatie is 100% right. How did you test it to determine it was 90% silver? I have very little doubt your coin is in fact a forgery. I have seen many Yen and have yet to see an example where the denticles vary this much on the obverse from the reverse or the dragon is missing multiple spines. There is so much wrong with your example that it leaves little room for doubt. Here is an example of an original I acquire recently: Look at the denticles. Look at the spines on the dragon. You are missing the first few spines completely. There is also quite bit wrong with the face and the swirl. I am quite certain that this is a cast copy. What is the weight of the coin? Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Count me. I also feel the 1880 Yen is a fake. Is the weight okay? This is the very first step to determine a coin fake if the weight is out of acceptable range.

Nice coins, although I agree I don't like the look of that yen.
The 1871 however looks good and is one of the tougher type coins... they are worth a decent amount, but not nearly as much as the first issue of 1870-71 with a dragon!

Quote: How did you test it to determine it was 90% silver? LCS has an XRF-light -- it doesn't provide a breakdown of all the metals present, but it is designed to tell you if the coin is within the spectrum for certain designated purities: 90% silver, sterling, .999 silver, .999 gold, (I don't know what else). The coin is underweight, which clinches it. It is 18.25 grams. I may request an acid test to confirm the metal content. But I bought it as part of a bulk purchase by weight, so I am not unhappy.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you.

That yen coin is of course one of the most widely forged types. I've actually never in person yet examined a genuine specimen, although I've seen many fakes. I've said this before, it's one of those that ought to be regarded presumptively as counterfeit unless and until proven otherwise. Quote: The coin is underweight, which clinches it. It is 18.25 grams. So, yes, it can't possibly be made of 90% fine silver. I'm wondering if the "validating" XRF results might be due to its being (heavily) silver plated, although most phonies of this caliber aren't and this one doesn't look like it is. But if so, an acid test won't necessarily give a true picture of its composition, either.

The Meiji 13 (think it's 1880?) is definitely not genuine. The low weight is another indication. Just because it assesses the silver test does not mean that it is not plated. Only a specific gravity rest can give a better idea what it is.
