After almost 20 years I am returning to the hobby of coin collecting! Younger me used to collect coins and recent me started collecting silver and gold coins a few years ago. A short while ago my girlfriend moved in with me and with her came her stamp collection from when she was younger. That got us comparing collections and rehashing those old feelings that collecting brought us...which brought us to wanting to collect coins and stamps again. We have slowly been going through what we have in our respective collections and have started organizing and sorting.
-----
As I have been going through the collection from my youth, I have found less than a hand full of half and full dollars; which means most of my collection is pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. There are two ways that I have come to sort the coins which I think has some influence from my silver collection (which is sorted by year). They are all in 2x2 cardboard holders and in standard pages that are 4x5.
My Old Method: All coins of one denomination together. So I will have my pages of pennies, pages of nickels, etc. This makes it easy to have varieties side-by-side and to see quickly if a single coin of one type is missing as I just leave a gap for that missing coin.
My New Method: Keeping them in the pages by year. Since most of my collection [thus far] is penny through quarter, I will have a row for 1920 and a row for 1021, etc. This of course causes issues for varieties as now a single year might take up 2 rows because one of the coins has a variety; such as large and small penny for 1920. I fill in gaps that don't need to be filled with white 2x2 squares and missing coins are just left empty.
Both seem to have their pros and cons, but I think I just like the look of the year set better. Filling in a complete year just feels more satisfying then filling in an entire page of each denomination. When I get to the point that I start adding half dollars to the mix, I figure that I can switch to vertical instead of horizontal which would give me the 5-coin year column instead of the 4-coin year row.
Am I completely out of my mind or does anyone else do things this way?
NOW...time to start reading forum posts and getting myself back up to speed now that the internet is a tool that can be used for collections!

My entire collection is set up by year with all denominations of each year together.
My most denominations for 1 year is 1897 with all 4 gold,
My most of one year with all mint marks is 1934 with 14.
It's a great way to have fun and not get stuck on sets.

Sounds familiar. I started at a young age and returned a year ago. I still have all my coins from when I was a kid. You signed up to the right site. You'll get a crash refresher course in 4 months. to CCF!
