Have this quarter that is jet black on one side and the regular silver on the other, unsure what this is called. I ran water over it thinking it might have been marker or ash or something to that nature and definitely isn't, so looking for the proper name for this error/variety/whichever coin.

Called toned. Think grandmas silverware, is just a tarnished surface. Was probably once in a folder that was exposed to a chemical, fire.. .many things, the back was more protected. It almost looks like a fire, was on the floor, surface and rim was exposed...coulda been intentional too

The obverse has toned (tarnished) and the reverse was more protected as in a coin folder.

Being made from silver, this coin is definitely worth saving.

With regard to the toning, I'm wondering what CCF folks think about leaving the coin as-is vs. removing the toning. When it is all the way to black like this, the surface of the coin is being damaged, right? Or since this is a relatively low grade common Washington quarter, maybe it doesn't matter as there is relatively little numismatic vslue beyond melt?

If it were mine I'd keep it as is but I'm weird like that.... could be intentional but could have a story you never know

Ok awesome, at least I know what it is now. Thank you all so much! I've been going through box after box, sleeve after sleeve of coins and trying to separate them all so this definitely helps. :)

It might be a good candidate for experiment, but I would prefer to leave it alone.

No value beyond melt, imo.
