Double B in BRITT. Looks like the engraver made a bad slip trying to repair the line above BRITT, and above and below the queen.

There seems to be a lot double punching and MD in this series. Heres another one with a doubled B but I think it's MD.

Cheers, Bill

MACHINE DOUBLING...I find lots of these have it.

The only re-engraved error I'm aware of is the E over F in FD variety.

Can only 1 letter be from machine-doubling ? I have an 1864 that has doubling on RITT REG, which I was going to put in a new post, which would probably be from Machine Doubling, but 1 letter ? On the 1864, The B is not doubled, on the 1861, ONLY the B is doubled !!?

My coin is different from Hounddog Bill's - double B is different as well as the line around inside the rim (not broken where mine is).

You're right TerryT...that does look like a repunched B / Re-engraved rim...

I think you mean F over E (when you examine it closely). Secondly, that is a re-punched letter, not re-engraved... but hey, I am a stickler for nomenclature...

I think that it's MD, where the die is a little loose. In the split instant after the strike is made and the die is starting to rise, the small movement in the die slides a tad bit ... or so I've been told and what the books say.

Chadcoins...looks like a mix of repunched and Machine Doubling?

The B has split serifs suggesting repunching or true doubling...the other letters dont and show the "pushed metal" of Machine Doubling.
