I was watching this lot of ancients on ebay because it appears there was a Quietus antoninianus hiding among the coins. I was considering bidding, but things came up, I lost track of time and I didn't get in a bid. The lot sold for $222. It was tempting to bid with the other silver antoniniani in the lot, but I couldn't be sure what the Quietus, if that's who it is, was like. I also couldn't guarantee that it's a genuine coin from the bit of the obverse that shows. This might be a "I'll kick myself later" kind of auction, but I'll never know. I've included the auction photo of the lot, a close up of what I think is the Quietus and then a photo of a Quietus from VCoins for comparison. Paul Bulgerin

A lucky collector secured these at less than $6 per coin - a nice little bargain.
Antoninianii of Quietus are scarce, but far from very difficult to obtain. So don't be too disappointed that you missed out this time. This example seems to be struck quite a way off center.
Authenticity: It depends in part who the seller happens to be. From the pictures, it seems to be OK me.

Not a bad looking pile, I agree with Sel's comment.

Certainly a fun purchase with or without the Quietus.

I can see that these are not particularly high grade ants. Assuming the buyer just wants to resell the bunch individually, what will the typical mark most probably look like? To what market would these be directed/targeted?

I see one Gordian III, one Decius, two that could be anyone between Gordian III and Gallus, and the rest are typical low grades.
You can get a decent Quietus for about $150-200; the rest of the coins probably aren't worth more than 80 combined. I think the buyer *probably* got a good deal... but what if that Quietus has a big, nasty chip conveniently hidden behind Decius? What if the reverse is completely corroded off or gouged?
My point being, any dealer worth their salt knows about Quietus, so I would be highly suspicious about this lot. I certainly would love to own one of his coins, but I probably would have bid $150 max on this lot.

Thanks for your comments, Finn. They make me feel better about not getting in a bid.
You're right; there are too many "what ifs" with regard to the parts of Quietus you can't see.
Still, it was a fun lot to ponder.

Defensive thinking is always good to help your own protection, especially if buying on ebay. It should be an habitual way of thinking.
