Hi. Just joined as a member. Was thinking about getting this coin graded but noticed scratches that may be due to abrasive claening. Any opinions on grading?

From where I sit, I would say no.

Yes, it looks like it's been severely cleaned "Details" Grade? XF.

Welcome to the club!

So if it has already been cleaned, would it be ok to complete the process? Clean and polish to display or would that further hurt the remaining value? What should I do with it?

This is actual a Weimar Republic 5 mark. I'm a huge collector of Weimar Republic coinage and have dozens of them, including several of the above Hindenburg 5 Reichmarks. This is not a particularly rare/valuable coin (the sample above can be purchased for under $100) so do as you will with it. Personally, I wouldn't do anything further to it, especially polishing. In my eyes, there is nothing uglier than a polished coin as they become dull and lifeless. Also, if you polish, you will prevent the coin from re-toning.

As for grading, had this coin not been so abrasively cleaned, this would be an MS coin. In the current condition, it would probably grade AU details.

Here is a link to give you a flavor of the book values. Note, these are only book values.

No! No! No! No! The first rule of coin collecting, never ever clean or polish a coin. Unless you are a professional and really really know what you're doing. Put it in a 2x2 flip and call it a day. Just enjoy the coin as it is.
