Not sure what is going on with the last digit in the date.

With the slant,
it's not oriented as a 1 would be,
to low for the top of a 6,
to close to the 5 to be part of a 7.

Looking closer, it almost looks like something under the 5 as well.

Mechanically damaged by a coin wrapper or vending machine.

1954? the slant seems off to me yet I do see a sharp horizontal line and a vertical line under the top of the last digit yet out of orientation for a 4.

Regardless, I'm sure it's what CrazyB0 said, PSD from some mechanical device, and then a long time in circulation smoothed the field around the PSD.

As for the term Mechanically Damaged MD? I checked the glossary because I always think of it as mechanical or Machine Doubling:

MD
1. Short for Mechanical Doubling.
2. Short for medium date.
3. Short for metal detecting.

Wouldn't all damage be mechanically damaged unless it was a man made error which would still require some mechanical device.

So to keep from confusing myself and also to better identify the potential higher value at time of strike (TOS, new acronym) or Strike, I'm learning to use Post Strike Damage ( PSD) for coins like this one.

PSD is such a clear, succinct division of time for when the damage happened and typically all PSD is a low value for the coin.

Once again, thanks everyone for your help! YAEA CCF!

To me, it looks like something moved the digit sideways - some sort of machine or an odd hit.
