My apologies, I thought that I stated the year, mint mark, and denomination.
Thank You!

I just received a reply from John Wexler and this is what he had to say.

Hello Jim,

Good photos, They show everything that I need to see. You definitely do have a specimen of 1970-S WDDO-024.

The partial 7 sticking out of the top makes it the doubled die.

John

I still don't understand though, how that little bit sticking out above the 7 can make it a doubled die. However, I did ask him when I replied back to him, to explain how a DDO can also show obvious MD.

Doubled die can have MD as well. I prefer that they don't but it happens because the doubled die are struck with the same issue that normal coins go through. It happens.

Thank you Coop! I will log that in the memory bank that DD's can be on a coin with MD's. I found two more in those two rolls by the way, that makes two WDDO-024's and the third one (not a WDDO-024) that I'm still trying to identify. I've found a few of the markers so far. There are a lot of 1970-S's to look through on Wexler's site.

Perhaps we should take a poll and see who agrees that it should be omitted as a DDO and deleted from Wexler's site

I'm pretty sure this wouldn't work. To disprove a variety being a doubled die we have to give evidence, not just popular opinion.

Doesn't matter what it looks like, it matters what caused it.

Doubled Dies and Machine Doubling are caused by two completely different things at different times in the coining process. Doubled dies occur during the making of dies while Machine Doubling occurs during the striking of blanks planchets. So, it is entirely possible that these two production flaws can occur on the same coin. Also, some examples of the 1969-S doubled die (the really, really big one) have Machine Doubling on the date.

Tanman2001: Pretty close.

Striking happens usually on planchets, not blanks.

The difference? A blank is the cut stock material. (type A)
1970-S-LMC-WDDO-24-I-Finally-Found-One!
The blanks are run through an upseting mill turning them into planchets. (type b)

When the planchet is struck, then it is a coin.

Don't sweat it. Now everyone will know and soon forget who said what. You know? Who made a mistake last week? We don't remember, we just remember what the correct answer is. That is the purpose of this site. Find the answer.
