I have some interest in acquiring an 1843 Mature Head, Large Letters Large Cent; N-17 variety and am having difficulty finding info about it other than it's very rare. I think I found the attribution needed to verify it's a N-17 vs. other varieties of this date so I'm pretty excited about it. Does anyone have the estimated number that are known to exist of this variety? My old Cherrypickers estimated 25 but that may be old info at this point. Is this a variety that demands interest from collectors?

It is listed as an R-6- so 25 to 30 pieces sounds about right. It is desirable but it won't bring huge money. The third finest known piece in the Holmes sale (A VF-30) brought $1,323 including buyers premium.

Thank you Conder that was helpful. I guess I just wanted you to confirm what I was seeing from my limited info about this variety. I guess the premium isn't as high because there aren't many people collecting by variety in this series?

If I end up acquiring it then I'll post pics in the main US Classic forum.

Correct, since attribution of the late dates is much tougher, and there are still a lot out there that haven't been attributed (compared to the early and middle dates) there are fewer collectors and many that do collect are trying to cherrypick their own goodies from the unattributed pieces (like many VAMers do) I'm that way. I have a liking for the 1843's for some reason and if I could cherrypick a N-17 then I would probably go ahead and try to get all the varieties of the year. But at the moment my interest isn't high enough to actively collect them without such a cherry pick.
