I've been looking everywhere for an entry-level proof Indian cent, and while I've found them online, all of them are way out of my price range. I'm looking to spend no more than $250, and all the price guides say that I can get a nice PR-61-PR-62 for that price, the problem is, I cant find them anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You should find one up to PF 63 RB for $250. Here's one from ebay as a 62 in your range.

Rest in Peace

Search for proof Indian cents on ebay and "save your search" so you'll get regular updates. After that, confine yourself if you like to TPG examples with return privileges.

Sorry to hijack, but I want to know how you tell a proof from a red bu IHC? I have a few red unc IHC`s that are very nice coins. full strike etc
Most look better than the ebay coin and I figure that You or those reading this know how tell the difference. IHC are my favorite coins
Thanks Gary

gary - You need to examine just one or two IHC proofs in hand to understand the mirrored surface, which is totally unlike a business strike. This is difficult to capture in pics, but instantly obvious when you hold it.

I looked on Rick Snow's site, and I did see several coins that I liked, but all of them were nowhere close to what I wanted to spend. If I contacted Rick directly and explain my situation, do you think he might be able to find something?

This one should go for around $250. If it runs too high, another will be along soon enough

Well I have one: a proof 1906 for which I paid $30 back around 1979. This was before slabbing or even numerical grades. So that accounts for one more of them.

Offer $200 on the one Andrew suggested, and I think there's a 6% ebay buck thing going today too.

The price guides are dreaming especially if you are looking at slabbed coins. In general you just don't see slabbed 19th century proofs less than PR-63. If you do they tend to be real dogs not nice coins. It seems like if it doesn't show mishandling, stains or ugly toning it gets called a 63. And many of the 63's I have seen are not that nice.
