Is this a 1928 large S? Why or why not?

Is there a large S small S for that year? Looks flattened from circulation wear.

Looks like it might be a large mint mark die that struck it:

Note the mint mark on the small mint mark (MMS-002) has a more curves in it than the large mint. (MMS-003)

to the World of Repunched Mintmarks!

There's no such ting as a "large S" in the 20's, 40's yea. What you have is a smashed date/mintmark thats been made wider but there is enough fine detail left to determine it is an RPM(just barely!) Note the circled areas in red and the alignment of the mintmark. Nice lucky catch!

Sorry Crazy, you're wrong on this one. The large S on the 1928 is very prominent and unmistakable once you've seen it.

I definitely agree there are two S mintmarks for 1928 though I must say all of mine are the large variety.
The MM position does look close for rpm-004 though the coin is battered. What bothers me is the amount of extra metal that shows west of the bottom serif. It seems too much and too long. There also , to my eye , should be more evidence of the repunching to the west of the upper loop. here is a pic of my 1928-S rpm-004 to show what I mean.

The OP's coin is a bit battered so 004 is still a possibility

Excellent pic.

By the way, I have 60+ 1928-S cents, and only 5 are the large MM, for what it's worth.
