Does anyone else use a method like this to check the weight on 82 LMCs? If I did decide to go ahead and buy the precision scale that I'd almost never use, what kind should I get (other than one that is good to the hundredth of a gram)?

You would be better off with a cheap digital scale. something like this one.

or this one.

Brought back memories, yes I did. Uses an swipped an emory board fro the wife, glued a copper on one end, and glued a piece of drinking straw for the fulcrum. Then I won a cheap digital scale in a auction and been using it ever since. Most digital scales are fine in tenths, unless you are really into the counterfeits, then a hunrdreths is mandatory. For just cent, dimes nickels, most contemporary coins have quite an allowed tolerance. Thin or thick rolled planchet stock is not that unusual to have some at the upper or lower regions of weight. NBFD (No Big F...g Deal) if it is out of tolerance, not worth any real premiums.

Yeah, small digital scales are cheap enough and accurate enough to determine whether a cent is zinc or copper (99% of the time).

I use one that only does 1/10 of a gram and it suits my needs just fine.

I agree with John1, go ahead and get the scale that does to .01 grams. The precision is nice to have and they don't cost any more. The down side is they don't have as high a maximum weight capacity, but if you are dealing with coins how often are you going to need to weigh a coin that is over 200 grams? (Over 6 oz troy)
