Looks AU50 to me and worth about melt $1,240.

Coin looks like it has a great strike and details. Unfortunately scuffed and it's a common date.

first, it's a $20 Gold which is great. I see nothing to worry about as far as authenticity.

1904 is a very common date and this one has quite a few bings and bangs.

$1300 is a fair retail price.

Thanks everyone for the great info!

I bought it at an auction for $1,200.00. Sounds like I did just ok. Just need the price of gold to go up I guess haha.

Any good tips or references for me to learn what to look for when looking at coins grading wise?

If I don't see a known grading slab, I just assume its the lowest grade and use the lowest online pricing point as my max bid. That way, no surprises. Well I guess if I win the coin and its a better then G grade, its a pleasant surprise.

Mostly, look for the high points (crown or head dressing) to be worn down from circulation or any bag marks, from rubbing up against other coins when it was in a bag at the bank or mint. If you can't see any of those wear issues then good chance its MS (mint-state)
