I was fortunate to inherit my dad's Canadian 1967 set with some silver coins and the $20 gold coin included. It is not pure gold but contains just over a half ounce gold.

Coins have been well preserved in the leather case and the gold fifty cent piece has been kept mostly in a safety deposit box up until now. However they have been handled with bare hands over the years and I thought a dip in acetone before storing them again might be prudent. I have used acetone on silver coins but this is the first gold coin I have owned. It is generally sold at bullion value but I would like to keep it looking good without damaging anything. Thoughts?

Plain old soap and water is OK on most gold coins.
Acetone equally OK as soap and water.
Water dries off more slowly
Whatever you use, don't rub the gunk off. Gentle water jetting or rinsing should be all you should need to do. Gold is soft.

If you have a pristine proof gold coin, it shouldn't be dirty in the first place.
Forget about copper spots on alloy gold; they can't be removed. Pure gold coins won't have spots of any kind.

Canadian gold 1967 gold $20 is 90% gold. If it has been handled, it will be 'Almost FDC', definitely not FDC *.

* = Fleur De Coin = absolute pristine condition.

If 'almost FDC' acetone OR water won't help much.

Shouldn't be a problem.
