Hey Everyone, I live in Arizona and am retired. While watching You-Tube, it cycled to a coin show and I thought I would get a couple rolls of pennies and see if I could find anything. I did! Just a freak thing I guess but those two rolls had a little of everything and now I'm hooked. All the references to the different conditions of the pennies is still beyond me. I've got 5 photos of a 71 with a high rim and one photo of a 69 that I just don't know. How would you refer to these 2 pennies? Thankx

to the forum and the hobby.

If you are interested in collecting coin errors and varieties, here are a handful of websites that I found helpful when starting out:
http://www.error-ref.com/
http://doubleddie.com/
http://www.varietyvista.com/
http://coppercoins.com/

The 1971 penny is likely what we call a " Dryer Coin". The unnatural color and raised rims are signs that the coin went through a clothes dryer.

I am not sure what you are referring to on the 1969 penny. But it does look like the top of the D mintmark was damaged, which could have been caused by something hitting the coin.

To the funny farm!.....er Forum!

A hobby to keep the mind busy...how about counting the flowers on the wall, no wallpaper? No problem! Check out micro-errors on coins at 100-300X 8-16 hours per day for two months ...you'll see flowers even when they ain't there! All seriousness aside, don't start trying to see errors every where, the ones easily seen at 10-15x are just fine, you'll last about four hours before your eyes go crossed!

Great references listed above to start learning what is and what ain't an error and what are the noteworthy error or doubled die coins. Add Mine to the list, Vol. 2 just put up today!

Thanks everyone for getting back to me so quickly. Every time I think I have found something it turns out to be a trick of light or the wrong date or something. I'll keep looking.

If you are form the Phoenix area, then it is a lot harder to find stuff in change. (so many collectors scanning them all the time. I try to get my change from small towns or from casinos. Seems like that is where I find better finds. Coin shows are also a help.
