MM is damaged, it has taken a hit and the top has been flattened as the result.

No. It is a damaged coin. A double die that year would show on the devices, not the mint mark. In 1990, they started putting the mint mark as part of the design. So after 1990, a doubled mint mark would be a doubled die. But up till 1989 a mint mark that would show doubling on it would be a RPM. (Re-Punched-Mint mark) But on your coin it is just damage on the mint mark. Not a variety.

I know nothing about the identifying of coin errors but I must commend you on your photography. It is one of the best that I've seen on this site

RPMs are from adding the mint marks to the dies with a punch, that was done by hand. The locations on the mint marks vary until 1990 when the mint marks are part of the design.
They are in different directions/locations and have different terms for them:
1964-D--Penny-MM-Double-Die-Or-Raised...-Weak-Die?
1964-D--Penny-MM-Double-Die-Or-Raised...-Weak-Die?
1964-D--Penny-MM-Double-Die-Or-Raised...-Weak-Die?
Some years have hundreds of different ones, others have just a few. They take a while to get familiar with.
I call them die varieties, as they are on the dies all the dies life.

The other varieties I enjoy are doubled dies. They are doubled on the die, not doubled by the strike. (But sometimes Machine Doubling affects affect doubled dies as well)
I have so much more information that them, that this space would be clogged with information. So I'll take it easy on them for you for a while.
