I have been recently interested in medals this past year. Especially those of US historical figures and events. I feel like a leper in a public swimming pool as there aren't too many CCF members here who share my enthusiasm. At least it doesn't appear that way to me.
I have some patriotic heroes, some old west heroes and they sometimes cross over. Medals of animals, battles and ships. Significant historical events. The list could go on. There are some themes that have been covered many times by different mints and designs of the same subject. There are some very low mintages that can be found and some beautiful artwork. I like my coin collections, but for some reason medals and tokens have really gotten a hold of me. Maybe because there is such a deep well of refreshing new hunks of medal to explore.
So am I all alone out here? Will I be shunned when I post a Franklin Mint item that I like? I was thinking of starting a post your most recent medal thread but wanted the poster to supply some information that have on the item. The resources out there can be very elusive and maybe, the thread would help in an educational way.

Yea TNG, you may be an albatross. I just posted a thread about the history of The 1830's Hard times tokens, woulda thought there was more than three interested. Oh well, you will be unique! I may not share your enthusiasm for those areas, but I am always willing to at least learn a bit about them. I like history and the back stories of these items.

Looking forward to seeing what you post. I saw numerous medals today of historical figures. Not in the best of shape so I passed. But do not think you are alone.

Quote: for some reason medals and tokens have really gotten a hold of me. I admit that I have a burgeoning interest in tokens. Medals...I will say not yet. I'm not far/long enough into collecting to have reached that point. Like Crazyb0, I'm still interested in the history behind all of this great stuff we get to own, view and read about. I'll be looking forward to your future topic.

I started getting interested in medals because of the Presidential C&C sets. I have also been buying the Liberty silver medals. I have been looking at other medals at the US Mint website. I need to be careful, though, I still have coins to buy!

Don't collect them as such but I do pick them up when they turn up in the bargain bin. I did pick up a boy scout medal with ribbon yesterday as incoming tokens have been slim at the LCS.With ribbon Cahokia Pilgrimage trail. "A thousand years after the Native American city known as Cahokia sprouted on a floodplain east of modern-day St. Louis, Missouri, the story of its explosive birth and precipitous decline remains one of America's great mysteries." https://news.nationalgeographic.com...ssissippian/Really couldn't pass it up @ $1.50 There is a ebay listing for $7.50 Some of the coiners, do have attitude about anything that isn't money. Don't worry about it post them away, pictures do help. I will be posting its photo soon.

I guess I am simply stimulating my visual pleasure synapses by the endless varieties of medals that are out there. Don't get me wrong, I love my US, Canadian and other world coins, but after more than half my life of collecting, I am finding the medals a bit fun and interesting. I think the catalyst was when I got interested in Commemoratives and it branched off from there. I will be starting a thread here in the next few days for your latest medal or token acquisations but want to kick it off right. BTW, I do not have a ton of medals, but I look at a lot of them every day.

Hey, TNG .... Being a collector of exonumia for over fifty years now, I look at things quite differently than you do, it seems. When it comes to collecting tokens and medals, I've focused upon the nineteenth century, U.S. material. I enjoy the history and largely avoid the modern material, even though much of it can be eye-appealing.
From my perspective, the stuff I most appreciate is relatively scarce and challenging to acquire. Indeed, I've searched for decades to locate some items at a reasonable price. That's part of the challenge, and the less competition I have, the better my chances. Still, I do enjoy helping others who have a genuine interest; mostly, those who buy the books and delve into details, wanting to know more than "What's it worth?"
Consider that, when it comes to collecting the early exonumia, there's really not enough material to support a large collector base. To my experience, the great majority of coin collectors have little knowledge of the most commonly seen exonumia. Accurate price guides are virtually non-existent. Most collectors tend to prefer and never venture beyond filling holes in albums; this, as opposed to assembling a topical collection for which no albums exist.
Thoughts, anyone?
