During his reign, Louis issued next to denari also oboles on a small scale. Oboles were 1/2 denarius.

Obv: Cross Pattee
Legend: + VLDOVVICVS IM
Rev: Obverse and reverse dies; mallet to right and left.
Legend: + METALLVM
Diameter: 16mm
Mass: 0,58 gram
Mint: Melle ( Metallum)
Struck 814-819.

A Nice detail on the reverse are the mallets and dies.

Glad this one got bumped.

Really neat coin.

I had seen reference to this mint (Melle) before and wondered where it was , as compared to other Caroloingian mints that remain important European cities. Apparently Melle was the location of silver mines that were mined from the 7th century until some time in the late medieval era. Today the population is all of 3,900.
