1909 Hudson-Fulton Centennial Celebration Commemorative Medal. American Numismatic Society (Committee Strike) - c One of the more popular medals in a large variety of sizes and very, very common. (ANS's archive states 126k+ combined.) 101.5mm all the way down to 31.7mm. Celebrates the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton's steam powered navigation of the Hudson River in 1807 on one side, and the other celebrates the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery and the voyage of De Halve Maene (The Half-Moon) in 1609. The large size (76mm) originals were ANS strikes in silver and ten in gold. The other sizes done by the Celebration Committee were not struck by the ANS. The medals struck by the Celebration Committee were available in a variety of sizes and metals, including bronze, aluminum, silver, and most commonly silver-plated white metal. This particular medal is the 38mm (ANS called it 1.5") variety, silver-plated white metal, with original attached mount and loop, but without the original ribbon. ANS reported 4,912 struck for this type. Unlike some of the smaller and larger pieces, these were not sold to the public, but as prizes and rewards for students and athletes. At 36.4 grams it would have been quite a heavy item to wear. The most common issue (1.25" or 31.7-31.8mm) saw a combined striking of over 80,000 pieces. Much of the fine details which are prominent on the 76mm and 68mm issues were lost in the downsizing -- the legends are cramped or almost off-planchet, the details on the border, busts and the steamboat are gone, and this medal saw some handling as well by whomever owned it originally, giving it a lovely surface smoothness and patina not unlike a circulated silver coin. In the years leading up to 2002, many towns and cities across Europe had 'Euro Days' when pop-up shops were set up with all their goods priced in Euros, giving locals the chance to get used to the new money.
